To experience Florence is to immerse yourself in the masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture, the treasures and artistic heritage of Italy’s master artists who did their most creative work in this city, and that ever since has attracted tourists and visitors from all over the world.
But Florence has even more to offer. Every year, the city’s museums, exhibitions and cultural events offer a busy and varied cultural programme for lovers of every kind of art, from the sacred to the contemporary.
Thinking of spending a few days in Florence this September? Put these events in your diary.

Van Gogh e i maledetti.

Cattedrale dell’immagine. Until 11 October 2020

“Van Gogh and the Cursed Artists” is an immersive multimedia show directed by Stefano Fake, a 60-minute-long, high-definition digital story with a stunning original Dolby HD soundtrack that emotionally involves the audience in the controversial life and artistic times of Vincent van Gogh, one of the world’s most famous and best-loved artists, his troubled existence and unconventional choices put in context by the lives and works of some of the great painters of his day (Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Chaïm Soutine and Amedeo Modigliani).

Lorenzo Puglisi davanti a Michelangelo.

Basilica di Santo Spirito. Until 1 November 2020.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the return of Michelangelo’s Crucifix, the Santo Spirito monumental complex is putting on a show, “The Crucifixion”, featuring Lorenzo Puglisi, an artist who lives and works in Bologna, opposite Michelangelo’s famous Crucifix. According to the Bologna-born artist, this artistic dialogue between past and present “is a more intimate reflection on the human condition, possibilities and raison d’être. Through its rare lightness and delicacy, Michelangelo’s sculpture touches the heart.”

Peterson/Lavine, Come As You Are. Kurt Cobain and the Grunge Revolution.

Palazzo Medici Ricciardi. Until 18 October 2020.

This photographic exhibition chronicles the grunge music scene and its hero, Kurt Cobain, a symbol of late-20th-century American counterculture. More than eighty photos by Charles Peterson and Michael Lavine, some never seen before, offer a sometimes-intimate, sometimes-iconic portrait of the leader of a band that marked the history of contemporary rock. Music lovers will love this show.
