Taormina, Sicily

Visit Villa Comunale.

Created in 1780 as a private Royal Promenade for the then King Ferdinando IV Bourbon, Villa Comunale Park was later transformed into a public garden. The park is graced by fountains, statues, several stylish buildings such as the Chiosco della Musica, the Stazione Zoologica and the Casina Pompeiana. This park also hosts a famous antiques market where visitors can purchase great souvenirs and other more essential pieces. Families visiting Sicily with kids will also find a place for their children. There are a playground and a merry-go-round in the southeastern part of the park.

Soak in the sites at  Piazza IX Aprile.

Piazza IX Aprile is the town's centre, and it is where visitors get a real flavour of Taormina life. This centre is bordered by two beautiful churches and lots of appreciable little cafes. Funnily, it is the German-named Wunderbar café that stands out as the favourite for most visitors.

Visit Taormina's old clock tower.

The ancient clock tower is to the left of the historic centre of Taormina. Through the passageway within, tourists can see an amazing Byzantine mosaic which has been an icon of the island for a long time. The mosaic is referred to as Theotokos, meaning “The Mother of God.” It is a concealed part of the town, not frequently visited by tourists, making it a great place to go off the beaten path.

Visit Mount Etna.

Mount Etna is the second-highest mountain and also the biggest and most active volcano in Europe. The mountain has had over 100 eruptions, with the most recent one happening in 1992. There are also numerous cantinas where visitors can stop by for great food and wine grown on the slopes of the mountain's volcano.

Tour the Museo Naturalistico Regionale di Isolabella e Villa Caronia.

This site presents a rugged orography on the southeast slope where the dense vegetation of Mediterranean maquis stands out. The northeast part has a less steep morphology, where several terraces have been created and are connected with paths and stairways supported by stone walls.
