The soft white sand and blue waters of the Italian coastline make for breathtaking holidays throughout the year but there are certain times when visitors can get the most pleasure out of their experience. If you're wondering when to travel to Italy and see the Amalfi coast, the Italian rivieras, Sicily, Tuscany or the beauty of the Capri islands, there are ways to improve your holiday experience.

To avoid disappointment and spending more than you have to on your vacation, it's important to know when to book hotels in Italy and how far in advance you should confirm your flights. Our guide should help you plan the logistics -- and then you can start looking forward to the good stuff.

The best time to visit Italy with kids? Book during summer.

If you're travelling with children, summer is the best time to visit Italian resorts. During the height of summer, many beaches offer beach beds, umbrellas, volleyball courts, playgrounds and snack bars for the family to enjoy. This makes travelling with children easier, but remember that many Europeans and also Italians holiday in Italian beach destinations during August, making this the busiest time by the sea.

The UNAHOTELS Capotaormina offers a private beach with azure waters. Guests can enjoy cocktails and sundowners overlooking a view of the bay. This beautiful hotel is located in Taormina, Sicily, and offers traditional warm Italian hospitality.

Don't love crowds? Stick to off-season.

You can enjoy off-peak seaside holiday times in Italy in late Autumn, winter and early spring, from 1 November to the end of March, with the exception of the festive season (14 December to 24 December). During this time, hotels, ferries, tours and hotel bookings tend to be less expensive, and discounted sports, water and adventure activities are an added bonus.

The spring months offer mild weather and are a good time for couples and seniors to enjoy the relative quiet of the islands and Riviera. If you're visiting the Sorrento coast or Tuscany, late March to mid-June is a wonderful time to book your holiday in Italy. The days are still long and sunny, and the spring flowers are in full bloom.

The Versilia Lido | UNA Esperienze is located in Lido di Camaiore in the beach province of Lucca in Tuscany. Set just a stone's throw from the beach, tall palm trees greet guests as they arrive. Large windows let the sun in as guests relax in the lounge or decks.

Book flights and hotels in advance.

The nicest weather in Italy can be enjoyed between May and October, so this is an ideal time to visit the coastal regions. July and August are idyllic months on the Amalfi, Sorrento and Capri islands. It's best to book flights about six weeks in advance and your hotel room, hostel or B&B in Italy even earlier. Aim for making a reservation from a year to six months in advance for the more popular seaside resorts in Italy.

Flights: book in April/May or Mid September/October.

For less crowded planes and less expensive travel, consider flying from April to May and mid-September to October. Discounted airfares are sold from November 1 to December 14 and then from December 24 to March 31. Airfares to Italy are considerably cheaper during May. In spring, the beaches in southern Italy are the warmest and most suited to swimming and lazing on the beach.

Featuring gorgeous views of Mount Etna, UNAHOTELS Naxos Beach Sicilia is an unforgettable beach resort surrounded by citrus trees and olive grove, and it's also close to city amenities. Guests can dine al fresco overlooking the beautiful, blue ocean.

Hotel bookings: How to get the best hotel deals in Italy.

The best time to book for near-Rome beaches is at least three months before travelling. If you want to combine sightseeing and beach fun, the best time is April and May (excluding busy Easter week), and around mid-September to mid-October. Gruppo UNA  hotels are a great choice when it comes to comfortable beach resort accommodation, and is perfect for guests who want an authentic taste of warm, accommodating, friendly Italian hospitality.
