The world’s best-loved and most avidly-followed marathons are not just about sport, they’re tourist and cultural destinations too. From North to South, Italy hosts several events to satisfy the most experienced runners, novices and people who are simply interested in walking the wonders of Italy.
Marathons around Italy
The Ravenna Marathon, sponsored by UNESCO, leads to the discovery of unique early Christian and Byzantine monuments. Another important event not to be missed is the Ragusa Marathon: the Philippides. This race calls for runners to make like Philippides, the Athenian hemerodrome who in 490 B.C. ran the 42.195 km between Marathon from Athens to announce the Athenian army’s victory. Participants follow a route without any mile markers, totally immersed in nature on the Planata degli Iblei, with no time-keeping, watches or heart-rate monitors in sight. The race finishes at the iconic Home of Commissario Montalbano, on the beach at Punta Secca, where each runner is rewarded with an olive crown.
Rome Marathon
One of Italy’s most popular and heavily attended running races among runners from all over the world is the Rome Marathon: the ACEA Run Rome The Marathon. It is not only a race, but a journey in the history of the Eternal City. The route touches 30 of the most famous monuments and historical-cultural sites in the capital. A journey back in time, through Ancient, Imperial, Renaissance and Medieval Rome, a route that will definitely help runners to get less tired and more excited. Speaking of this race, the memory can only go back to the unforgettable summer night of 1960, when Abebe Bikila, Ethiopian runner, crossed the finish line of the marathon of the Roman Olympics barefoot, leaving a permanent mark in the history of this competition.
This year the Acea Run Rome the Marathon started on Sunday 19 September 19, at dawn at the Fori Imperiali, to the strains of All’alba vincerò, symbolizing rebirth and a new beginning. Entitled the Sunrise Edition Special Race, this is the marathon of rebirth, return to normality and restart. The consolidated route runs through Rome’s streets, passing along all the Eternal City’s major thoroughfares: in front of the Vittoriano, through Piazza Venezia and the Circus Maximus, along the Tiber banks, reaching Castel Sant'Angelo and Viale della Conciliazione with St. Peter's Basilica, and then the finish line in front of the Imperial Forums. it is a truly unmissable event for novice runners and walkers along the magical race route. It doesn't matter how fast you go or how quickly you cross the finish line, all that matters is living the magic of this run to the fullest.
