Versilia is famous for seaside tourism. In fact, this stretch of coast has long been renowned for its sandy, golden beaches. From Viareggio to Forte dei Marmi, the entire Versilia coast boasts hundreds of establishments, offering swimming pools, play areas, bars and restaurants, and sometimes even baby-sitting services. 

The Viareggio Pine Grove. 

The city of Viareggio has two large pine stands: the Pineta di Ponente and the Pineta di Levante. When people talk about the Pineta in town, they’re usually referring to the western woods, located in the city centre along Viale Vespucci, just a stone’s throw from the famous seaside promenade. Viareggio’s pinewood is a veritable green lung in the heart of the city. Planted in 1747 to shelter the town from the winds that whip in from the coast, it has long been one of the town’s symbols. It is ideal for a host of activities, from running to hiking or a nice bike ride around the park’s hidden corners. The little ones can have fun on the kids’ games and equipment. After a busy day lounging at the seaside, the pine grove is an ideal place to loll in the shade.

Boat trips with CE.TU.S. to discover dolphins.

Founded in Viareggio in 1999, the CE.TU.S. Centre is a non-profit association specialized in cetacean research in the Pelagos Sanctuary. Staffed by marine biologists, naturalists and engineers, the centre collects data on the presence, distribution, ecology and ethology of many cetacean species. It also runs dolphin-spotting boat trips for kids, a truly unmissable experience for young’uns and grown-ups alike. This is a perfect summer thing to do, especially since it is possible to have a meal on board and enjoy a day of fun out on the open seas. 

Pythagoras Park at Lido di Camaiore. 

The Versilia coast tourist resort Lido di Camaiore has seen its popularity rise over the years. While preserving its small town atmosphere, many new clubs, restaurants and shops have sprung up, though it’s still a perfect destination for those traveling with the family and children, not least because of the Parco Pithagora, believed by many to be the finest play space in Versilia, packed with events, initiatives, sports and music. The park offers a host of attractions for all ages, including a refreshment point and a bar for parents. It’s a perfect place for taking it easy while the kids have fun. 

Cycling along the seafront. 

It would be a shame to come here without enjoying the delights of a “promenade” along the seafront cycle path. Versilia has always loved cycling. Indeed, the town follows the sport with passion: not for nothing is it one of the stages on the Giro d’Italia round-Italy cycle race. To fully enjoy all 28 kilometres of its picturesque views, take a long, slow pedal. Kilometres and kilometres of cycle paths allow you to enjoy the sea air. Stop from time to time at one of the many bars in the towns along the way, from Forte dei Marmi to Viareggio, not forgetting Marina di Pietrasanta. And while you’re at it, make a pit-stop at Giosuè Carducci’s birthplace and Giacomo Puccini’s Villa...
