Since 2014, the City of Milan|Cultura has promoted themed cultural programming across the city. This year, the theme is dedicated to “The Talents of Women”, from exemplary figures of the past to many women working today, leading lights in the arts, culture, business, politics, sport and science.
From large institutions to small associations, all of the city’s cultural players are involved, staging events that tie in to the programme theme.
I talenti delle donne“ was conceived to highlight women as creators of extraordinary developments in the widest variety of artistic, cultural and scientific disciplines, as well as being responsible for significant changes in the social field.
Come and discover five not-to-be-missed exhibitions on women in Milan.

Kate Tedman - The Surface. From February 7 to March 28. c|e contemporary, Via Tiraboschi 2.

In the English artist’s first solo show in Italy, she presents a series of works in which she combines painting with the art of embroidery. Kate Tedman creates fascinating, dreamlike worlds inhabited by fish, plant elements and eccentric, mysterious subjects from far-off times.
For her first exhibition at c|e contemporary, Kate Tedman has created her works by embroidering old engraved portraits and old oil paintings. The artist uses the art of embroidery in a modern way, enriching these works from the past and  breathing new life into them today.
Without damaging the integrity of the original work, Kate Tedman applies new colour to these curios she finds at flea markets and antique fairs.

Trisha Baga. the eye, the eye and the ear. From February 20 to July 19. Pirelli HangarBicocca, Via Chiese 2.

Trisha Baga, an American of Filipino origin, is one of the most innovative young filmmakers and artists of her generation. Her practice spans a variety of devices and media, embracing installations, sculptures, performance and videos. Drawing on television imagery, the web and amateur films, the artist reworks the material to tackle themes like gender identity, the digital world and technological evolution, turning them into series of unpredictable narratives.
In a journey from VHS to DVD and 3D, visitors are invited to embark on a real journey, donning stereoscopic 3D glasses in an immersive environment that expands physical space into numerous levels of visuals and sound.

Donne politecniche. February 25th. Archivi storici Politecnico di Milano, Via Candiani 72.

This exhibition is structured around four main stories about Maria Artini, Rosita Bossi, Liliana Grassi and Gabriella Crespi, four women important in engineering, architecture and design at the Politecnico di Milano.
This corpus is flanked by other sections: the first presents a diachronic pathway about women’s attendance at the Politecnico di Milano from the early 1900s to the present day.
A second section is made up of a selection of “female” patents, while another section features a video montage of interviews with Polytechnic women of today.

Parlami di lei: tenEramente forte. From February 18 to December 20. Casa Museo Spazio Tadini, Via Jommelli 24.

This exhibition from Emilio Tadini takes us on a journey through the iconography of the female figure, from Greek mythology to the present day, using the gaze and analysis of the female universe in Tadini’s work.
The artist identifies himself in the role of women, inviting visitors to reflect on women in society and in the realm of the sacred, from Piero della Francesca to Joyce, running all the way back to the Gospels.
His work is also a tribute to his wife Antonia Tadini, the muse and hub of his life.

Tania Bruguera. From March 31 to June 7. PAC-Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Via Palestro 14.

Cuban artist Tania Bruguera is one of the most influential figures on the global art scene today. Never far from the realm of activism, her practice seeks to investigate the relationship between power and media through provocative performances that challenge the powers-that-be.
Tania brings a selection of her most significant actions, plus a new work designed specifically for this Milanese space, and a new performance that is one of the highlights of miart and Art Week.
Bruguera lives and works between Chicago and Havana. She is the founder and director of Arte de Conducta, Latin America’s first theatre studies program.
The exhibition is curated by Diego Sileo.
