Travel films: 4 titles to find some inspiration

Travel films: 4 titles to find some inspiration

We’ll go back to travelling. More than we used to and with new eyes. But meanwhile, let’s go travelling with our imagination by watching some great films that have captured Italy’s beauty

Gruppo UNA

A trip on the road to find ourselves; a holiday to a faraway-country to leave something behind or to step into adulthood. Travelling has always been a fascinating subject that has inspired directors and writers in creating unforgettable stories on the pages of a book or on the big screen. And today that travelling is limited and we must stay home, a good story may help us travel to those places that we have visited in the past or that perhaps we dream of going to one day, finding the inspiration for our next trip.

Eat Pray Love

Based on an autobiographical book by Elizabeth Gilbert’s, played on screen by Julia Roberts, the protagonist engages in an intimate journey travelling to Naples, India and Bali looking for adventures and flavours. One of the settings is Italy and with its culinary delights in which the protagonist indulges throughout all her journey. One famous line in the film is about pizza:  “I’m having a relationship with my pizza…let’s say it’s a form of ‘bread, love and carbs’!”

Swept Away

Two outstanding actors in one of the great Italian comedy classics. Mariangela Melato and Giancarlo Giannini play the roles of a wealthy business woman from Milan and a Sicilian fisherman who become stranded on a desert island. The two must learn to live with each other and come to terms with their obvious differences.
Shot in the province of Nuoro on the eastern coast of Sardinia, this film offers beautiful seascapes and two hours of pure fun.

Call Me by Your Name

The monuments of Crema, the centre of Cremona, the surroundings of Lodi and elegant country villas create the sophisticated atmospheres that serve as background to Elio and Oliver’s summer love story. Even if the original story is set in Liguria, Call Me by Your Name directed by Luca Guadagnino was entirely shot in different areas of Lombardy, a region that, perhaps for the first time in this film, appears in all its beauty.

Tre uomini e una gamba (Three Men and A Leg)

A journey across Italy, from north to south carrying a precious and rather peculiar object inside the car boot. Destination: Giacomo’s wedding in Gallipoli. Always fun to watch, this road movie has become part of the collective imagination thanks to the unforgettable cult scenes and comic sketches played by the Aldo Giovanni and Giacomo trio.
