Breakfast is a veritable ritual, the most mouth-watering meal of the day when we stock up on the energy we need to face the challenges ahead, whether it be a job interview, a city tour, a sports match or merely our everyday commitments. Little wonder it’s so important to take time out, sit down and enjoy a rich and tasty breakfast, especially when you’re on holiday and can’t wait to try out the local delicacies.
If you’re planning a weekend in Milan or are in town for a few days, keep these addresses to hand. Whether you’re interested in one of the classics or a new alternative, you’ll find it all at a Milanese breakfast in a historic bar or at one of the latest hot tables.

Gelsomina - Via Carlo Tenca, 5.

This artisan pastry shop between Repubblica and Porta Venezia brings the flavours and scents of Southern Italy to Milan with a selection of exquisite desserts: cassate, cannoli, maritozzi, but above all croissants and brioches filled with pistachio cream. True greatness for breakfast. Gelsomina also does lunch and aperitifs, so take advantage of its strategic location and explore the local neighborhood.

Sissi - Piazza Risorgimento, 6.

Twenty-five years this pastry shop has been here, becoming a historic spot in Milan famous above all for its brioches filled “to bursting” with delicious homemade creams. Perfect with a cappuccino, but if you want to try something different, we heartily recommend the brioche with cooked ham, washed down with freshly-squeezed juice. You really can’t go wrong.

Panificio Davide Longoni - Via Gerolamo Tiraboschi, 19.

Known these days as the “baker to Milan”, Davide Longoni has made baking his vocation and recovered the ancient technique of natural leavening. Don’t be surprised that bread and focaccia are the most popular products in his shops with locals and visitors alike, or that their croissants and brioches are great too. On the weekends, be prepared to queue up to get in. It’s that worth it!

Marotin - Via Archimede, 59.

“A pastry shop and cafeteria with a Parisian atmosphere in a delightful corner of Milan”. That’s Marotin’s description of itself, and it’s spot on for this temple to sweet things. Come and enjoy homemade cakes, pralines and generally excellent food at breakfast and lunchtime. The selection of cakes here will satisfy the sweetest of teeth: bavarese, crema e cioccolata, pear and chocolate cake, lemon or chocolate sabbiosa, and sponge cake with nuts and honey or custard and raspberries. Truly, something for everyone!

Bastianello - Via Borgogna, 5.

Located in the heart of Milan a stone’s throw from the Duomo, historic Milanese pastry shop Bastianello stands apart for its luxurious, opulent and refined furnishings, and for its great variety of gastronomic offerings. Their cakes and pastries delight both eye and palate, making any breakfast time special. And afterwards, you get to walk it off in Milan’s shopping streets!
