Italy's most beautiful beaches as you've never seen them
9 Dec 2022
Christmas is approaching, and many are looking for ideas on where to spend the holidays: many are opting for some mountain destination, perhaps a nice chalet to retreat to after a day on the ski slopes. There are those, however, who choose to go in the opposite direction, spending Christmas at the seaside.
December is the ideal month to go away, so why not change the scenery and head for one of our country's seaside resorts? After all, even in winter they do not lose their charm.
In addition, the temperatures allow you to enjoy the local beauties that are usually very crowded in the high season: you might find interesting proposals for a nice last-minute trip. So, discover with us some of the must-visit destinations for spending the 2022 Christmas holidays by the sea.
Christmas holidays between Naples and Salerno
Christmas in Campania means, among other things, visiting the world-famous Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples: the street is known as Via dei Presepi and offers a unique spectacle during the Christmas festivities. And just over 1.5 km away you will find UNAHOTELS Napoli where you can find the right accommodation for your stay.
In Salerno, which is less than an hour's drive from the capital of Campania, you will discover a new side to the nearby Amalfi Coast. The sea in Salerno during winter is in some ways even more beautiful than during the high season.
This is a scenario that you can admire when walking along the Lungomare Trieste: the promenade between the sea and the city, running from the old town to the marina, offers a unique panorama.
You can also experience an exciting Christmas in Salerno because of the many initiatives that come to life during this period. The best known is 'Luci d'artista', a great tradition of the city.
It is an exhibition of illuminated works of art that fill the squares and streets. The theme of the 2022 edition, which closes on 15 January, is the world of fairy tales: an event not to be missed, especially if you are looking for a destination to spend Christmas at the seaside with children.
The winter sea of Apulia
Apulia is an excellent choice if you want to spend December by the sea. A good starting point is the capital city of Bari, which is full of all kinds of festive events during this period. Take advantage of a nice walk along the famous Lungomare in late Art Nouveau style.
Among the area's architectural features is the Kursaal Santa Lucia cinema-theatre, decorated with floral motifs. If you are looking for easy and convenient access to the city and all its events then the UNAHOTELS Regina Bari is for you.
Spending Christmas in Salento
And why not also discover the fascinating Salento sea at Christmas 2022? This area is known for its beaches and landscapes that know how to bewitch in every season, summer and winter alike.
Strolling along the Salento seashore during the Christmas holidays will provide you with special, peaceful moments under a warm sun (the average temperature is expected to be 17°).
In addition, the Salento area is famous for the folklore of Christmas traditions, such as the Living Nativity Scenes organised in evocative locations. Take a look at the one in the village of Tricase which, set in four hectares of pine forest just 6 km from the sea, features 250 figurants recreating Bethlehem.
And if you are in that area, also pass by Otranto, one of the most famous towns in Salento. Did you know that it is the first point in our country from which you can see the sun rise? Nothing better for your Christmas by the sea in Italy than admiring the sunrise in Otranto from a beach like the Baia dei Turchi.
Speaking of spectacular views, still in Otranto, don't miss the Punta Palascia Lighthouse, which on days when visibility is excellent allows you to see the mountainous border of Albania.
On this enchanting tour of Salento, why not take advantage of a stay at Posia Retreat & SPA | UNA Esperienze a 5* hotel offering the intimacy of a private villa between Otrano and Lecce.
Christmas on the coast of Sicily
Sicily, thanks to the climate and the absence of tourists, is the perfect destination if you were still wondering where to go to the beach for Christmas.
Christmas by the sea in Sicily means visiting the beaches of Cefalù, Scala dei Turchi and San Vito lo Capo, among others. On the eastern side, where Mount Etna dominates, Catania, Taormina and Syracuse stand out.
Land in Catania, where the hotel Palace Catania | UNA Esperienze is ready to welcome you for your holiday, and from here set off on your 'Christmas tour': if you head north you will find Taormina, one of the region's most popular destinations.
In the city, you can take the cable car and thus access the beaches of Mazzarò and Isola Bella. This is a small island connected to the mainland by a thin isthmus of white sand and surrounded by large stacks.
Moving southwards down the eastern side of Sicily, we arrive at Syracuse, ideal for holidays in December. Among the various beaches, the one at Fontane Bianche is well known, beautiful even in the last days of the year.
Spending the Christmas holidays by the sea is therefore anything but madness. On the contrary, this time of year will allow you to enjoy both the unseen side of the big cities during the festive season and the quieter side of the beautiful landscapes of our peninsula.
