Who said that juggling electrical panels, tools, and technical unexpected issues is a job only for men? Breaking stereotypes is Carolina, Maintenance Technician at Trastevere Roma | UNA Esperienze. Her daily goal is to make sure that "everything works" perfectly. A behind-the-scenes yet fundamental role, which Carolina experiences as a true point of reference for colleagues and guests, as well as an important personal redemption.
Let's get to know the new protagonist of our "UNA è femminile" column better who, after Francesca Ferrara's story, returns to demonstrate, day after day, that skills have no gender.
Welcome Carolina, what is your current role at UNA Italian Hospitality? What are your duties?
Currently, I work as a Maintenance Technician at Trastevere Roma | UNA Esperienze. I am responsible for ensuring that all spaces are always safe, functional, and welcoming. This allows me to know the property inside out and develop a complete vision of how the hotel operates. If I had to explain it to a child, I would say that my job is to make sure that "everything works" and is as it should be.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is actively participating in the operation of the hotel and being a point of reference for it. The maintenance role is cross-functional; it connects with all departments and contributes to the daily smooth running of things. Knowing that my work truly helps colleagues and guests is what gives me the greatest satisfaction.
And the most complicated part?
Rather than complicated, I would define it as stimulating. A maintenance role touches on many different operational areas, and every day brings new challenges. This variety allows me to continuously learn and test myself in ever-changing situations.
Outside of work, do you have any particular hobbies or passions?
I am on the board of directors of a Civil Protection association, and I am a member of the Council and the Executive Board of the Comprehensive School attended by my children. I dedicate myself with commitment to every area I am involved in, which makes me a reliable point of reference who is often entrusted with responsibilities.
If you could describe yourself with three adjectives, what would they be?
I would define myself as practical, determined, and authentic: I strongly believe in the value of clarity and always express my point of view constructively.
If you could describe your company with three adjectives, what would they be?
I would describe my company as sustainable, inclusive, and future-oriented. It is a reality that demonstrates attention to people and the local territory with a clear vision projected towards responsible growth.
What advice would you give to a young woman approaching the hospitality sector for the first time?
The keyword is always "hospitality". Combine this with a positive approach to work and a willingness to put yourself out there. In this sector, if you start with a smile and the right attitude, you're already halfway there.
In the workplace, have you ever had to deal with prejudices related to being a woman?
Internal and external stakeholders are often surprised to see a woman in maintenance. More generally, throughout my life, I have faced many prejudices. Therefore, this role represents a personal redemption not only for me, but for all women, demonstrating that skills have no gender.
There is still a long way to go to achieve gender equality in Italy. In your opinion, what measures could companies adopt to guarantee gender equality or to meet the needs of female professionals?
Our company is already visionary compared to the general Italian context. It is important to overcome stereotypes regarding roles and tasks, balance compensation, guarantee continuous training, and recognize family responsibilities without penalizing careers. These are fundamental steps to giving equal opportunities to all female professionals.
