17 Apr 2019

The charming capital city, Rome (Roma), is an incredibly popular destination during this period and finds itself at the centre of the nation's celebrations. The weather in springtime is often very pleasant, with sunshine and slightly cooler temperatures making this season the best time to visit Rome.

Easter holiday dates in Italy

Celebrations for Easter (Pasqua) in Italy this year begin on Thursday 18th April and last for five days, concluding on the following Monday. Each day of the festivities celebrates a different aspect of Easter, so there is always a variety of experiences available for the curious traveller.

Explore Rome at Easter

The inspiring and often breath-taking architecture and street culture of Rome sets the perfect backdrop from which to take in this city of contrasts.

At the top of the list of sites to visit is the world-famous Colosseum. This wonder of the world is the grandest example of ancient Roman architecture and provides an unparalleled glimpse into the past.

If you are spending Easter in Rome, make sure you also head to the majestic structure of St Peter’s Basilica. This church is the largest and most spectacular religious building in Italy and the most superb example of Renaissance architecture. Inside you will find a collection of some of Italy’s most extraordinary artistic masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s Pietà. Easter is the best time to visit Rome if you want to witness the unrivalled spectacle of thousands of pilgrims congregating in St Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday to join the Pope in celebrating the morning Mass. You can either book a seat (for free) in advance or just turn up on Sunday morning if you don’t mind standing.

If you are looking for a hotel in the centre of the city, then make sure you check out the UNAHOTELS Decò Roma. This art deco building is a perfect reflection of Italian style and is conveniently located in Rome’s historic centre -- a stone's throw from the main train station. The central location is a few metro stops away from the main tourist attractions, making exploration simple and stress free. If you are a fan of Italian cuisine, the hotel restaurant is a very popular dining destination and serves traditional dishes with a modern twist. It is the perfect base from which to explore the Eternal City, and the friendly and knowledgable staff will be more than happy to point you in the direction of local sites.

Easter in Italy: food

Italians love food, so it is no surprise to learn that Italy at Easter time is a particularly fantastic week to visit for any fans of gastronomy. From countrywide traditions to local delicacies, Italy celebrates food with great enthusiasm during the Easter period.

Across Italy it is traditional to eat lamb which is prepared in many different ways, depending on the region. During Easter in Rome, abbachio alla Romana is the preferred dish to serve for lunch. Creating this mouth-watering meal involves roasting the lamb in an oven with garlic and herbs, and this is served alongside potatoes. A true taste of tradition!

For many Italians, the egg is a symbolic ingredient during this period and represents the theme of rebirth. Castiello Napoletano is a savoury cake that is a staple dish for many in the springtime. This ring-shaped delicacy contains a mixture of salami and cheese and is instantly recognisable because of the whole eggs that have been baked into the top. Those with a sweet-tooth will be pleased to know that no Easter celebration in Italy is complete without the giving of a wrapped chocolate egg. These brightly decorated eggs adorn shop windows all over the capital and come in a fantastic range of colours and patterns.

When in Rome on Easter Monday, make sure you do as the Romans do: pack a picnic and head to the local parks. Pasquetta (little Easter) is a time when locals head outside to enjoy nature with family and friends. Relax with a glass of local wine and enjoy the springtime sun on your face.
