The Legend of Saint Agatha

Before delving into the programme of the upcoming celebration, let’s rediscover the story of the Saint. The most widely accepted version states that Agatha was born around 235 into a noble family from Catania. From an early age, she developed a strong faith in Christianity, which was spreading across the Roman Empire at that time.

Governor Quinziano, who had come to Catania to restore order imposed by the emperor Decius, saw her during the persecutions and fell in love with her. He attempted to force her to renounce her faith, but the girl’s belief proved unwavering, and she did not surrender even to the most brutal tortures. The most gruesome act, the amputation of her breasts, later became the iconic symbol of the Saint.

On 5 February 251, Agatha was sentenced to death and immediately became an object of worship within and outside the Christian community as an example of strength, virtue, faith and determination.

The story of the martyr is intertwined with other legends. For example, it is said that during her martyrdom, a powerful earthquake struck the city of Catania, or that a year after her death, Mount Etna erupted dangerously and only the saint’s veil was able to protect the citizens from certain death.

Saint Agatha 2025: dates and programme

This year, the Feast of Saint Agatha takes place under the sign of the Jubilee, offering an even richer calendar. In January, conferences, award ceremonies and processions will take place leading up to the key dates of the celebration. Among the many scheduled events, one of the most striking is the Concert for Saint Agatha, staged on 1st February at the Bellini Theatre.

The true Feast of Sant’Agatha starts on 3rd February with the famous fireworks display in Piazza del Duomo. Access to the square is always restricted and the turnout is very large, so be sure to arrive early to enjoy the spectacle.

The 4th of February marks the start of the celebrations, with the traditional Aurora Mass in the Cathedral of Catania. The bust of Saint Agatha majestically emerges from the church and the first procession begins, making its way around the city.

On 5th February, the feast concludes solemnly. The bust of Saint Agatha returns to the cathedral for the pontifical mass, after which it is transported through the centre of Catania and the various districts in a long and evocative procession.

Another folkloric element of the processions is the candelore – massive candles covered with handcrafted decorations, images of saints, scenes of martyrdom, flowers, gilded wooden cherubs and flags. Their origins date back to ancient times, and each one is carried by hand, presenting a distinct style and identity.
